UK venture capital update — 22 August 2026.
The UK government has announced the next £100 million phase of the British
Business Bank’s Investor Pathways Capital Initiative, a programme designed to
increase the supply of early-stage venture capital across the United Kingdom.
The announcement, published by HM Treasury and the British Business Bank on
7 August 2026, says the new phase could support as many as 10 additional
venture capital funds. The wider initiative is intended to invest £400 million
in total.
What has been announced?
The next £100 million deployment follows the first Investor Pathways Capital
cohort. In June, the British Business Bank committed up to £90 million to
10 new microfunds.
Applications for the next cohort are expected to open in autumn 2026.
The programme is focused on supporting emerging and first-time venture fund
managers and expanding early-stage investment capacity across the UK.
What does this mean for startup founders?
The £100 million should not be confused with a direct £100 million grant
programme for startups. The capital is being deployed through the investment
initiative and participating venture fund managers.
For founders, the practical opportunity therefore appears later in the
capital chain: as selected managers establish or expand funds, those funds
may become new sources of equity investment for eligible early-stage
companies.
A founder evaluating these opportunities should look at the mandate of each
individual fund rather than assuming that every company will qualify.
Important filters include investment stage, sector, geography, typical cheque
size and the fund’s own application or introduction route.
Why the regional dimension matters
A stated objective of the new phase is to broaden venture capital availability
across the UK rather than concentrating new investment activity only in
London.
For companies outside the largest established venture hubs, the significant
development will therefore be the identity and investment theses of the fund
managers selected for the new cohort. Those details will determine where the
new capital can actually reach founders.
What founders should watch next
The next material milestone is the opening of the autumn 2026 cohort and the
subsequent announcement of participating fund managers.
